Surgical removal of the cervix. It is indicated in selected cases of women with cervical cancer who wish to preserve their fertility or who have been diagnosed with cervical cancer during pregnancy. Simple trachelectomy involves the removal of the cervix only, whereas radical trachelectomy involves the removal of the cervix, parametrium and vaginal vault; in both cases, a uterine cerclage may or may not be added. It can be performed laparoscopically, robotically or vaginally.
