uterus
The hollow, thick-walled muscular organ in the female pelvis. It consists of the fundus, which is the site of embryo implantation and foetal development. Beyond the isthmus at the perineal end of the fundus is the cervix uteri (the neck), which opens into the vagina. Beyond the isthmus at the upper abdominal end of the fundus are the fallopian tubes. It is also known as womb.
