An assisted reproduction technique involving the laboratory processing of a semen sample in order to separate motile sperm cells from seminal plasma, non-sperm cells, and other components. In some clinical contexts, especially in the management of HIV-serodiscordant couples, it is used to reduce the risk associated with viral particles carried in seminal plasma or infected cells.
