It is also known as embryonic biopsy; embryo cell biopsy. The procedure is typically performed as part of preimplantation genetic testing (PGT).

Type of
micromanipulation in ART; preimplantation genetic testing procedure; embryology laboratory procedure
May cause
embryo selection for transfer; identification of aneuploidy; identification of monogenic disease; identification of chromosomal structural rearrangement; discarding or non-transfer of affected embryos
Caused by
indication for PGT-A; indication for PGT-M; indication for PGT-SR; suspicion or known risk of inherited disease
Is accompanied by
embryo culture; assisted hatching; cell removal; genetic laboratory analysis; embryo cryopreservation; embryo transfer; clinical counselling
Examples
Embryo biopsy is performed widely to obtain genetic material from the embryo in order to obtain chromosomal, genetic and genomic results.
This DNA analysis, conducted on material acquired from an embryo biopsy before transfer, facilitates the identification of chromosomally normal embryos.
