follicular atresia
A programmed biological process consisting of the degeneration and reabsorption of ovarian follicles at any stage of their development. Although it intensifies during each menstrual cycle —where only one follicle reaches ovulation and the rest of the cohort dies—, atresia occurs continuously throughout a woman's life, serving as the primary mechanism responsible for the decline of the ovarian reserve.

After the ovulation, the oocyte released from the dominant follicle becomes the corpus luteum and the remaining follicles undergo follicular atresia.
However, despite this upregulation, histological assessments demonstrated significant impairment of folliculogenesis, characterized by increased follicular atresia and defects in follicular progression.
