deoxyribonucleic acid
Nucleic acid that contains genetic information, responsible for the development and functioning of all living organisms. It constitutes the molecular basis of heredity and has a circular structure in mitochondria, where it appears as a single strand. More frequently, however, it appears as a double helix in the chromosomes of the cell nucleus. The acronym DNA is often used.

Examples
Assessing sperm deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) fragmentation (fDNA), and the presence of both double and single-stranded DNA breaks, is nowadays a common tool to determine the genetic competency of the sperm.
Strengths of this study include the large sample size and use of a single genetic reference laboratory to minimize variation in deoxyribonucleic acid processing and mosaicism reporting.
