A diagnostic procedure used to check for abnormal fluid or blood in the space behind the uterus, also known as the pouch of Douglas or posterior cul-de-sac. A needle is inserted through the posterior vaginal fornix to aspirate fluid and help diagnose conditions such as haemoperitoneum, pelvic infection or ruptured ectopic pregnancy.
