decondensation
The process of expansion of the chromatin structure, which is the highly compacted form of genetic material within the cell nucleus. During decondensation, the chromatin unwinds and becomes more accessible, facilitating the union of the paternal genetic material (the sperm) with the maternal genetic material (the egg) in the process of fertilisation.
